Guardians end August with rebound win vs. Royals.

Image
The Guardians shook off a two-game losing streak with a beatdown of the Kansas City Royals on Aug. 30, 11-1 at Progressive Field. The win moved the Guardians over .500 at 69-68 and within 3 1/2 games of Chicago in the AL Central race. Joe Ramirez hit his first home run since early June and collected four RBI to lead an offense that totaled 13 hits and scored three runs in three different innings. This came after collecting just three runs in the first two games of the weekend series. Cleveland lost the first two games of the homestand after a 6-0 trip vs. the Rockies and Angels.  Cleveland trailed early 1-0, but Nathaniel Lowe's 2-run home run in the bottom of the first inning gave the Guardians a 3-1 lead, and they never looked back. Chase DeLauter went 4-for-4 at the plate, scored three times and doubled twice; he also made a nice running catch near the wall in right field. During the radio broadcast, it was noted how DeLauter's sore hamstring was being tested. Th...

Royals keep Guards on skids

Image
The Cleveland Guardians apparently do not like home cooking. Give them the chain restaurant and hotel bed all day, every day. The Guardians again played like they hate playing in their home park and lost to the Kansas City Royals, 8-3, on Aug. 29 in a Saturday matinee. Cleveland jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on an Angel Martinez two-run homer in the third, but some shaky infield defense and a leaky bullpen undid the Guardians, who have now lost two straight after winning seven in a row - six of the wins came on a recently completed trip to Denver and Anaheim. Cleveland fell to 68-68 with the loss and is now 4 1/2 games out of first place in the American League Central race. A crowd of 31,509 watched, many clad in replica Bob Feller 1936 jerseys handed out before the game to the first 15,000 in attendance. Cleveland is 31-36 at home this year and has lost 10 of its last 14 at Progressive Field. "There's no explanation for it," Manager Stephen Vogt said of hi...

Tanner ain't been that bad

Tanner Bibee is nowhere near as bad as his record of 5-14. He could sue the Guardians for non-support. In eight of his starts, he has received zero run support. He has posted 17 quality starts, defined as when a pitcher goes at least six innings and allows three or fewer runs. All of that was on display in the 3-0 loss to Kansas City on Aug. 28, in which Bibee went six innings and allowed seven hits and just one earned run. He struck out five and walked two. But the Guardians still lost. And he still lost. 5-14. Wow. For the season, Bibee, in 28 starts, has an ERA of 3.88 and has 128 strikeouts in 162 1/3 innings pitched.  He didn't give up a home run in the loss to KC, but he has been hurt by the gopher ball, having been touched for 26. Surprisingly, Gavin Williams has given up 27 homers. On to the next one. Foster Griffin toes the rubber this afternoon at 4:10 p.m. against Daniel Lynch IV, a 6-foot-6 lefty who is 4-4 with a 2.93 ERA. This is his fourth start of the year.

KC snaps Guards win streak at seven

Image
So much for the seven-game losing streak. The Guardians' offense failed to fire, and the Kansas City Royals got a strong start from Michael Wacha and just enough offense to beat Cleveland, 3-0, on Aug. 28 It was the 13th time this season the Guardians have been shut out, and they dropped to 31-35 at Progressive Field. They actually loaded the bases with two outs, but pinch-hitter Angel Genoa tapped back to reliever Steven Cruz on a 2-0 pitch to end it and send 31,941 home unhappy. Cleveland dropped to 68-67 on the season, and starter Tanner Bibee was saddled with the loss as he dropped to 5-14 on the season. He allowed just one earned run on seven hits, while striking out five and walking two. He did not surrender a home run, which has been one of his major problems in 2026. That and little to no offensive support. See this game as further evidence. The Royals scored their lone run off Bibee in the fifth inning. Bobby Witt Jr. opened the frame with a double. He advanced on a fly ou...

Guardians red hot after 6-0 road trip

Image
The red-hot Guardians return home tonight to start a three-game series with the equally hot Kansas City Royals (60-75). Cleveland is winners of seven straight and KC has won nine of its last 10. Tanner Bibee (5-13, 3.97 ERA)  takes the mound for Cleveland against Michael Wacha (7-8, 3.97 ERA). What a road trip for the Guardians. They went from ICU to the penthouse by going 6-0 on a road trip to Denver vs. the Rockies and Anaheim vs. the Angels. They finished the trek off with a come-from-behind 4-3 win over the Angels on Aug. 26. It was the Guardians' seventh straight win, and they improved to 68-66 and remained  2 1/2 games behind the White Sox. Cleveland, in the matinee trip finale, trailed 3-0 before batting back for the win. Steven Kwan’s ground-rule double plated the tying run in the ninth inning, and Travis Bazzana’s sac fly drove in what turned out to be the game-winning RBI. Kwan transformed into an offensive sparkplug beginning in July and has led an offen...

Guards remain hot with win in Anaheim

Image
\Make that five wins in a row for the Guardians. Austin Hedges hit a huge two-run home run, and Parker Messick provided another strong start as the Guardians won their fifth game in a row, 4-2 over the Angels on Aug. 25 in Disneyland, AKA Anaheim. The win moved the Guardians back to the .500 mark at 66-66 and to within 2 1/2 games of the White Sox in the AL Central lead. With the Guardians holding a slim 2-1 lead with two outs in the top of the sixth, Hedges connected for his fifth homer of the year to give Cleveland a 4-1 lead. The win lifted Cleveland back to the .500 mark for the first time since the morning of Aug. 5 when they were 57-57. Hedges is having a career year. Entering the 2026 campaign, he boasted just a career batting average of .185 over 11 seasons. This season he is hitting .270 with an on-base percentage of .338 and a slugging average of .397. The key to the turnaround? “I’ve got a plan, and I commit to it,” Hedges told MLB.com. Messick, the rookie l...

Guards move on to Angels after polishing off Rockies

Image
Chase DeLauter hit not one but two triples and drove in two runs as the Guardians finished off a weekend sweep of the Rockies with a 7-2 win on Aug. 23 at Coors Field. It was Cleveland’s fourth straight win and fifth in six games. DeLauter, the rookie outfielder, tripled in his first at-bat of the contest and drove home Steven Kwan, who opened the game with a base hit, to give the Guardians an early 1-0 lead. Cleveland would collect a total of 12 hits. The top three of the lineup for Cleveland, that being Kwan, DeLauter and Jo Aadell, went 7-for-14 with four runs and four RBI. Lefty Foster Griffin did a five-and-fly, going five innings and getting his 15th win of the year. He allowed two earned runs and struck out five in five innings of work. DeLauter ended up going 3-for-4 with two RBI, scored two runs, and walked. Cleveland (65-66) is 3 1/2 games out of first place in the  AL Central according to MLB.com and was the third wild card team. The marathon that is a...

Guardians continue mini hot streak thanks to Adell

Image
The Guardians won their third straight game. Jo Adell hit a three-run home run, and Tanner Bibee provided another quality start as Cleveland knocked off Colorado, 4-3, on Aug. 22 at Coors Field. Cleveland improved to 64-66 with the win and moved to within 3 1/2 games of Chicago in the race for the AL Central race. Cleveland is tied with Texas for the third wild card, but Texas holds the edge by virtue of winning the season series. Bibee went six innings and allowed two earned runs. He scattered five hits and struck out six while walking one. It was his 16th quality start of the year (six innings or more, three or fewer runs), and he improved to 5-13 on the year. Six of Bibee’s last seven starts have been quality starts, but this was his first win since July 20 vs. Minnesota. Adell gives Cleveland something it has craved. A right-hand power-hitting corner outfielder. His 3-run bomb to left field traveled 450 feet and came the same week he hit one 455 feet against the Giants....

Bazzana's big night keys Cleveland win

Image
The Guardians received a huge offensive night from rookie Travis Bazzana and won their second in a row as they blasted the Rockies, 9-1 on Aug. 20 at Coor Field. Bazzana went 4-for-5 with three RBI and scored two runs to lead a Cleveland attack that collected 14 hits. The Guardians improved to 63-66 with the win and remain 4 1/2 games behind the White Sox for the AL Central lead. Cleveland is now tied with Minnesota for second in the division. Petey Halpin's solo home run in the third inning tied it up at 1, and Cleveland would go on to score eight more runs. Steven Kwan continued to sizzle at the plate. He went just 1-for-4 with an RBI, but he walked twice, drove in a run and scored a run. He has been on base in 44-of-48 games and since July 1 has been one of the hottest hitters in baseball. Tim Herrin (2-4) picked up the win in relief of Joey Cantillo. Cantillo went 4 2/3 innings and left leading 4-1. But Herrin got the last out of the fifth and vultured the win. Cant...

Guards get back on good foot with series win vs. SF

Image
The Guardians split the final two games of the Giants series, losing the middle game, 1-0, and winning the finale in an Aug. 19 matinee, 5-2. When it was all said and done, the Guardians had won the series from the Giants and improved to 62-66. Gavin Williams picked up the win in the Aug. 19 game. The hard-throwing right-hander struck out 11 over 5 2/3 innings while allowing two runs and four hits and walking four. Cade Smith pitched a scoreless ninth inning to pick up his 32nd save. The win came less than a day after the Guardians lost a 1-0 heartbreaker to the Giants on Aug. 18. That loss had more than a few experts ready to write the Guardians off for 2026. It was Cleveland's second shutout loss in three games and the 12th time Cleveland had been shut out in 2026. Adding to the misery, it dropped the Guardians to 30-34 at home. It also wasted a superb starting effort by left-handed rookie Parker Messick, who struck out 10 and allowed just a single run in ...

Jo Adell goes off in Guards rout of Giants

Image
It was the Jo Adell Show on Tuesday night. The Guardians' right fielder hit a first-inning 3-run home run as part of a career-high six-RBI night as the Guardians clubbed the Giants, 8-1.  Adell, who Cleveland acquired at the trade deadline from the Angels, added a two-run single in the second inning and an RBI double in the fourth inning. He did all of this with a left knee that throbbed with pain. Three pitches before he hit his home run, he fouled a pitch off his knee. He remained in the game until the pain became too great, and he was taken out by manager Stephen Vogt. The Adell home run flew 455 feet, deep into the left field bleachers. Adell is day-to-day. The Guardians also played without rookie outfielder Chase DeLauter, who left Sunday's game with San Diego with hamstring tightness. Cleveland improved to 61-55 with the win and moved to within 4 1/2 games of first-place Chicago. The White Sox lost for the second night in a row to the Cubs. Jose Ramirez had th...

Guardians continue to flounder

Image
A day after they celebrated winning the 10,000th game in club history, they played like the season was over. The Guardians were shut out for the 11th time in 2026 on Aug. 16 as they lost to San Diego, 5-0. The start of the game was delayed by more than three hours, and the Guardians never looked like they showed up. Cleveland won the 10,000th game in franchise history on Aug. 15 by beating the same San Diego team. The latest loss again went to Tanner Bibee. It was the 13th loss of the season for the right-hander, who has just four wins. Bibee allowed just seven hits and three earned runs over six innings, but was again bitten by the home run. He allowed a pair of solo home runs to Luis Rengifo and Gavin Sheets back-to-back in the second inning to have Cleveland playing from behind, 2-0. Cleveland is fourth in the MLB with 11 shutout losses. The loss dropped Cleveland to 60-65. They've also lost seven of their last 10 and are just 9-19 since the All-Star break. Chicago (...

Guardians get big win, 10,000th in franchise history

Image
Now that’s more like it. The Guardians got great starting pitching, some timely hitting, and solid defense. The result: A 6-1 win over the San Diego Padres on Aug. 15 that ended a two-game losing streak and, oh by the way, was the 10,000th win in franchise history. Cleveland is the 11th franchise in MLB history to win 10,000 games, but just third in American League history. The Yankees and Boston both have more than 10,000 wins. Joey Cantillo started and was fantastic. He allowed just one hit and one run over six innings, striking out seven and walking three. Patrick Bailey’s RBI double in the second inning gave Cleveland a 2-1 lead. Steve Kwan, Chase DeLauter and Jo Adell had two hits each for Cleveland, which improved to 60-64 on the year. Travis Bazzana had the defensive play of the game in the seventh inning. He made a diving stop on a ball hit to his right off the bat of Manny Machado; after tumbling to field the ball, Bazzana was able to throw Machado out. A big crowd...

Guardians continue to spiral in loss to Padres

Image
The Guardians continue to spiral as they lost the first of a three-game series to the San Diego Padres, 7-5, on Aug. 14. A sellout crowd, nor a three-run lead nor an ace on the hill could help the Guardians on this night. Nathaniel Lowe and Brayan Rocchio homered to give Cleveland a 2-0 lead that swelled to 3-0. Gavin Williams couldn't hold it as San Diego struck for two runs in the fourth and three runs in the fifth inning. Xander Bogaerts hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning, and Fernando Tatis Jr. added a solo shot in the fifth inning off of Williams, who dropped to 11-7 on the year. Williams lasted just 4 1/3 innings and gave up seven hits and five earned runs. A crowd of 35,726, which did not include Tony, who is now banned from all Guardians regular-season home games, watched the Guardians fall to 8-18 since the All-Star break, according to Cleveland.com. They've lost five of their last six and 15 of 21. Jose Ramirez did not play as he continue...

Guards slump continues as Vogt starts to get heat

Image
The feeling of hope around the Guardians was brief and shattered on Aug. 13. Cleveland failed to score and managed just four hits in a 3-0 loss to Detroit on the road. Cleveland was coming off a 6-4 win the night before but could not maintain the momentum. They fell to 7-17 since the All-Star Break and are now 53-69. Cleveland remained four out of first place behind Chicago. Detroit is in second and Minnesota is third. Chase DeLauter had two hits to pace the Cleveland offense. Cleveland is now 12-46 when they score three or less runs. They’ve lost seven of their last nine games. Eduardo Valencia hit a solo home run in the sixth inning to increase the Detroit lead to 2-0. Parker Messic took the loss and fell to 9-7. There has been a steady drumbeat of criticism levied against Cleveland manager Stephen Vogt. In the loss to Detroit, he was lambasted for not starting Angel Martinez, who had three hits in the win the night before and was on a hitting tear. He's also been acc...

Cleveland gets back on track with win over Tigers

Image
The Guardians put a temporary end to the misery that has been the post All-Star Break, with a 6-4 win over the Tigers in Detroit on Aug. 12. Jo Adell hit a two-run home run, and Angel Martinez had three hits to lead the offense. Martinez doubled twice and drove in a run. The win snapped a three-game losing streak. Cleveland found itself losers of 6-of-7 before winning. Cade Smith pitched a four-out save. He had to throw 40 pitches to do it. Austin Hedge reached base three times via the walk and also collected an RBI and was 1-for-2 at the plate. Cleveland improved to 59-62 and remains in fourth place. They are also a game out of the wild card with Detroit and Minnesota between them. Foster Griffin started and earned the win. He went five innings and allowed one earned run and struck out three. A crowd of 31,400 watched it at Comerica.

Guardians continue to stumble in loss to Tigers

Image
The day off did not help the Guardians. They went into MoTown and bumbled and stumbled their way to a 6-4 loss to the Tigers. The loss, the Guardians' third straight and sixth in their last seven, dropped them to 58-62 and solidified their grip on fourth place in the AL Central. They remain four games out of first behind Chicago. Detroit has won 8 of its last 10 and is just 2 1/2 games behind the ChiSox. Joe Adell and Chase DeLauter homered to lead Cleveland’s offense, which went 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position and stranded 11 runners. Tanner Bibee started and took the loss to fall to 4-12. He gave up five earned runs on five hits and struck out four over 6 1/3 innings. He did not allow a home run after allowing three in his last start. Detroit third baseman Kevin McGonigle collected two hits and drove in three runs to lead the Tigers' offense. A crowd of 30,709 watched it. Foster Griffin takes the hill for Cleveland, trying to stop these losing ways.

Guards open key series with Detroit

Image
The slumping Guardians are back at it tonight when they take the field in Mo Town, losers of two straight and five of six. They’ve slipped all the way to fourth place in the division with a 58-61 record. Chicago leads, followed by Minnesota and Detroit. The perpetually losing pitcher Tanner Bibee takes the hill for the Guardians. This poor righty enters the game with a pitiful won-loss record of 4-11 but a very respectable ERA of 3.85. He’ll square off against the 32-year-old righty named Drew Anderson. This guy is 4-4. He was the 668th in the 2012 Draft taken by the Phillies, and somehow made it to the big leagues. Detroit is on fire despite trading two-time Cy Young Award winner Tariq Skubal at the deadline. The Tigers have won 7 of 10 and 20 of their last 30. Cleveland at one time led Detroit by 11.5 games this year. Not anymore. Cleveland, on the other hand, has gone 3-7 in its last 10; an ugly 11-19 in its last 30. Cleveland leads the season series 6-0. The Guardians s...

Guards continue to sink

Image
5-3 loss in series finale vs. ChiSox. Welcome to fourth place. Hammy said it on the radio. We no longer have a superstar to carry club as was Jose Ramirez. Maybe Angel Ganeo? Guardians appear to be sinking fast. And after they made all those trades to get Joe Adell, Lowe and a starting pitcher, who got lit up in his first start with Cleveland. Guardians are four out, but must now jump three teams. At 58-61 they trail Chicago by four. Detroit is 58-60 and Minnesota 58-61 but hold a tie breaker over Guardians.

Guardians blow one in Windy City

Image
The Guardians blew a 2-0 lead and lost for the fourth time in five games as Chicago rallied for a 6-3 win on Aug. 8 in the Windy City. Rookie Angel Genao hit the first home run of his MLB career, but it wasn’t enough for Cleveland, which fell to 58-60. The White Sox (60-56) increased their lead to three games. Gavin Williams started and struck out seven in 5 2/3 inning. Colin Holderman came in and blew up. He hits two batters and gave up two hits and when it was all said and done the White Sox had taken control of the game. Cleveland took a 2-0 lead on Rhy Hoskins’ 2-run homer in the sixth inning. Bad news is Joey Cantillo starts for Cleveland in the rubber game of this all important three game series. He’ll be faced by Davis Martin (9-6, 4.13 ERA).

Martinez grand slam keys Guardians win

Image
Someone hit the pressure release valve, and his name was Angel Martinez. Martinez hit a grand slam home run and drove in six runs as the Guardians shook off a miserable series with the Mets by downing the Chicago White Sox, 8-2 on Aug. 7 in Chicago.  The win snapped a three-game losing streak for Cleveland and moved the Guardians to within two games of Chicago in the American League Central standings. Martinez connected for his grand slam in the fifth inning off of Chicago reliever David Sandlin. Hitting from the left side of the plate, Martinez hit a rocket deep into the right-field seats. It increased a precarious Cleveland lead from 2-1 to 6-1. The Cleveland dugout exploded in excitement watching the ball leave the park Parker Messick started and picked up the win, improving to 9-6. He went seven innings and allowed two runs while striking out eight and walking two. He gave up a pair of home runs. The three-game series with Chicago is a showdown for...

Guards get swept by Mets as slump continues

Image
An embarrassing 13-6 loss to the Mets in a Thursday afternoon matinee capped off a forgettable homestand for the Guardians, who went 2-4 and continued their second-half nosedive. Since the All-Star Break, the Guardians are 6-13 and have lost 11 of their last 14. The Mets came into Cleveland with the second-worst record in the National League, but hit nine home runs over three games during the sweep. New York clung to a 6-5 lead in the top of the seventh inning when Francisco Lindor tortured his old team with a three-run home run to right field off Craig Yoho to increase the Mets’ lead to 9-5 and suck all the energy out of the stadium. Cleveland (57-59) remained three games out of first place behind Chicago. But the Twins are now tied with Cleveland for second place. Recently acquired lefty Foster Griffin started and took the loss. He gave up a pair of home runs in the third inning after an Angel Martinez two-run single put Cleveland up 2-0. He ended up bein...

Guardian face must-win

Image
The fact of the matter is the Guardians are teetering on the edge of falling into the realm of also-ran. A two-game losing streak following a day of sweeping trade acquisitions is not in The Book on how to win pennants. But that is where the Guardians find themselves on this August 6 morning. At 57-58, they are under .500 for the first time since May 5, yet still remain three games out from the White Sox, who are also losing. So this afternoon at 1:10 p.m. might as well be High Noon for the Guardians. It’s a pivot point in the season. It won’t be easy. The Mets will be throwing Nolan McLean (7-7, 3.29 ERA), who has become an ace of sorts for New York. Cleveland will counter the newly acquired lefty Foster Griffin, who was 12-3 with Washington this year and a National League All-Star. The Mets are playing like the $365 million team that many picked as a World Series favorite and have been a scrappy foe. They've tortured Guardians pitching with the long ball. Tanner Bibee...

Guards fall in 10 to Mets

Image
Angel Genao had a debut for the ages, but it wasn't enough as the Guardians fell to the New York Mets, 6-5 in 10 innings on Aug. 5. Genao, the Guardians' No. 2 prospect, was promoted from Columbus earlier in the day and started at third base. He singled on the first pitch he faced in the Major Leagues. Gabe Arias was designated for assignment to clear the roster spot. Genao’s RBI single in the seventh inning gave Cleveland a brief 5-4 lead. Cade Smith gave it back in the top of the ninth. He walked Jared Young to start the frame. He induced Francisco Alvarez to foul out to Genao and then struck out pinch hitter Luis Robert Jr. But Jorge Polanco doubled, Marcus Semien walked, and AJ Ewing reached on an error by Bryan Rocchio, allowing Young to score the tying run. Matt Festa gave up an RBI single to Bo Bichette in the tenth inning, which scored ghost runner Francisco Lindor from second, and gave the Mets a 6-5 lead. It was a back-and-forth game. The Mets jumped out t...

New look Guards fall to Mets

Image
Talk about a buzzkill. A day after making three big trades, the Guardians fell on their face in a 6-2 loss to the New York Mets on Aug. 4. Cleveland picked up power-hitting outfielder Jo Adell, starting pitcher Foster Griffin, and first baseman Nahaniel Lowe on Monday deals. The thought was these deals would significantly improve a flawed roster that has remained in contention. Adell started and collected a pair of hits and scored a run,  but the Guardians squandered scoring opportunities all night long in the frustrating loss that dropped Cleveland to 57-57. Chicago lost, also, so Cleveland remains three games out of first place in the AL Central. Cleveland was 2-for-13 with runners in scoring position. Jose Ramirez did not play for the Guardians as he dealt with pain in his left wrist from a recent surgery for a broken hamate bone. Gabriel Arias started in place of Ramirez and had a night to forget. His throwing error in the third directly led to a 3-run home ru...

Guards make three deadline deals to vastly improve

Image
The Guardians may have had the day off, but the front office didn’t. The Cleveland front office went off, acquiring a power-hitting outfielder, a reliable bat at first base and another starting pitcher in three deals in the hours before the trade deadline at 6 p.m. on Aug. 3. Cleveland acquired Angels right-handed-hitting outfielder Jo Adell, Washington lefty starting pitcher Foster Griffin and Cincinnati first baseman Nathaniel Lowe. To make room, the Guardians sent David Fry and Kyle Manzardo to Triple-A Columbus. Adell brings a much-needed right-handed power bat to the lineup, which has struggled to score runs. He comes to Cleveland with 16 HRs and 62 RBI to go along with his .239 average. The Guardians parted with catching prospect Jacob Cozart in exchange for Adell. A former first-round pick, Adell blossomed a year ago as a a power threat with 37 HR and 98 RBI. Griffin came over in a four-for-one deal. Griffin was an NL All-Star and is 12-3. He is a soft-tossing lefty ...

Williams whiffs 10 as Guardians down D-backs

Image
Gavin Williams played the role of stopper/ace/No.1 as he struck out 10 over 5 2/3 innings as the Guardians downed Arizona, 5-0, on Aug. 2. The game snapped a two-game losing skid for Cleveland, which salvaged the third game of a three-game weekend series at Progressive Field. Williams was perfect through five innings. And it was the fifth time in five starts he has struck out at least 10 and walked less than two. Williams finally gave up a hit to Tim Tawa to lead off the sixth inning. Tawa angered many on the Guardians when he fouled off a bunt attempt on the first pitch of the at-bat. Williams only left because of a 1:34 rain delay. Chase DeLauter led the Cleveland offense with a pair of hits and drove in three runs. Patrick Bailey homered, his sixth of the year for the Guardians, who improved to 57-56. Chicago (59-52) remained a full three games ahead of Cleveland in the AL Central race. Chicago (59-52) downed Tampa Bay, 9-1. Minnesota did lose to Seattle, 7-6. The T...

Gaurdians fall to.500 in loss to Arizona

Image
The Guardians season continues to swirl toward no postseason. On a night when they finally got some offense going, the pitching faltered in a 12-8 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks on 1 August of 2026. The loss was the second straight fo I'mr Cleveland, which is no 4-11 since the All-Star break and fell to 56-56 on the season. A glint of good news came in the form of the score in Chicago’s game vs. Tampa Bay, the Rays won,1-0; and Minnesota was walked off by Seattle. Chicago continues to hold its three-game lead in the AL Central, while Minnesota remains tied with Cleveland. Parker Messick started and was not the Parker Messick we’ve become accustomed to. The rookie lefty walked the game’s leadoff hitter and escaped the first inning unscathed. He’d leave the game after 4 ⅓ innings, having allowed two runs on six hits while striking out six. Arizona blew the game open in the seventh, scoring seven runs. Hunter Gaddis was hammered for four runs and a home run; Franco Ale...

Guardians lose to D-backs

Image
The torture of Tanner Bibee continues, and the Guardians lost the first game of a weekend series with Arizona, 4-1, on Friday night, the final day of July. Cleveland and Bibee led 1-0 heading into the eighth inning. He got the first out of the inning, but gave up a walk and a base hit before being lifted for reliever Erick Sabrowski. It was not the best of performances by Sabrowski. He walked Corbin Carroll and then gave up RBI-producing hits to Geraldo Perdomo and Gabriel Moreno to make it 3-1. Moreno’s hit was punctuated by a misplay by right fielder Angel Martinez that brought Carroll around with the third run and the boo birds out. According to post-game talker Dennis Manoloff, it was the fourth time this season that Cleveland has lost a game after leading after seven innings. All four have come at home. Cleveland fell three games behind in the AL Central race as the White Sox of Chicago beat Tampa Bay, 6-1. Cleveland fell to 56-55 with the loss. The Guardians are ...
