Martinez grand slam keys Guardians win

Someone hit the pressure release valve, and his name was Angel Martinez. Martinez hit a grand slam home run and drove in six runs as the Guardians shook off a miserable series with the Mets by downing the Chicago White Sox, 8-2 on Aug. 7 in Chicago.

The win snapped a three-game losing streak for Cleveland and moved the Guardians to within two games of Chicago in the American League Central standings.
Martinez connected for his grand slam in the fifth inning off of Chicago reliever David Sandlin. Hitting from the left side of the plate, Martinez hit a rocket deep into the right-field seats. It increased a precarious Cleveland lead from 2-1 to 6-1. The Cleveland dugout exploded in excitement watching the ball leave the park
Parker Messick started and picked up the win, improving to 9-6. He went seven innings and allowed two runs while striking out eight and walking two. He gave up a pair of home runs.
The three-game series with Chicago is a showdown for first place in the AL Central.
Chicago dropped to 59-56, and Cleveland improved to 58-59. Minnesota remains tied with Cleveland, also at 58-59.
In other news, Gabriel Arias, who was designated for assignment to make room for Angel Genoa, was picked up on waivers by the New York Mets.
Arias had been having a down year and had drawn the ire of fans who thought he struck out too much and didn’t always hustle. His nadir with the team came on Tuesday night when his throwing error opened the floodgates for the Mets to score three runs in a win over Cleveland. Arias was DFA’d the next day and Genoa was called up.
