Guards knock off defending world champs

The Guardians received stellar starting pitching and a three hit night from Steve Kwan as they knocked off the defending World Champion Los Angeles Dodgers, 4-2. Messick went six innings and allowed five hits and struck out five. Cade Smith worked the ninth and was touched up for two runs. Angel Martinez had two hits for Cleveland, which is 3-2. The Dodgers dropped to 3-1. Kwan got the Guardians going in the top of the third when he rifled a double into the right field corner to score catcher Austin Hedges for a 1-0 lead. Rhys Hoskins’ walked with the bases loaded and a Daniel Schneeman’s bases-loaded two-run double in the seventh inning gave the Guards a 4-0 lead. Messick was a star on the night when he shut down the Dodgers and their $317 million payroll. “I’m so grateful I was able to go out there and glorify the Lord. What a way to start a rookie year,” Messick told The Plain Dealer after the game. Hedges cleared a huge milestone. He officially became a 10-year man. That means he’s...

Guards fall in Seattle

The Guardians got blasted last night in the series finale vs. Seattle, 8-0. Cade Cicconi took the loss. Some of it should go on the shoulders of left fielder CJ Kayfus.  Fit the guy for some goat horns.  That’s what I’m proposing.  He failed to make a catchable sliding catch that resulted in a big inning for the Mariners. Cleveland didn't get anything going offensively, so that did not help matters. The Guardians were held hitless until the seventh when rookie phenom Chase DeLauter collected a single. The Guardians would get one more hit the rest of the night. I watched the game on the Peacock app. Some of it. I saw Kayfus’s debacle. It was cool to hear Rick “Arc”  Manning doing the color commentary on the broadcast He’s been a part of the Guards organization since 1975 when he was called up to play the outfield and Frank Robinson was the manager. He’s been on the TV side of the team broadcasting teams for decades. But back to CJ Kayfus and the goat horns. The...

DeLauter continues to delight

Chase DeLauter continues to amaze, The rookie sensation hit his fourth homer in three games and the Guardians won a nail-biter 6-5 out in Seattle On Saturday night.. Cleveland is 2-1 on the season. They play Seattle tonight, March 29 on NBC in the series finale. DeLauter is one attention grabbers of the MLB opening weekend. He homered on opening night and then hit two more home runs the Guardians second game and followed that up with a 10th inning two-run homer on March 28 in the 6-5 win.. DeLauter is hitting .357 with a slugging percentage of 1.214 and an OPS of 1.571. The helmet The Guardians celebrate every homer by awarding the hitter a medieval-looking knight's helmet. Members of the team picked up the helmet during a spring training team dinner at a joint at a called Medieval Times. Maybe more on the dinner later?  What’s there to tell? The players who went dressed up like they were knights from medieval times. Reportedly outfielder Steven Kwan dressed as a wizard with a kill...

There is no joy in The Land

The 2026 iteration of the Cleveland Guardians will not go 162-0 this season. They lost on the road in the game 2 of the season, 5-1 to Seattle. Rookie sensation Chase DeLauter hit another homer for Cleveland giving him three in two games, but it was not enough for Cleveland which is 1-1. Just a public service announcement. This is a Guardians-themed endeavor. The title is in deference to Ray Chapman, the Cleveland shortstop who died after being hit by a pitch during a game vs. the Yankees in New York in August of 1920. Cleveland would go on to win the World Series that year. Chappie's grave is at Lakeview Cemetery, which is within walking distance of my house. I took a picture of myself at the grave, which will appear from time to time on the blog. Gavin Williams took the loss. He was hurt by walks and the long ball. He gave up a pair of home runs and walked six batters. Seattle’s Luke Raley homered for the second time in two nights. That’s a story because Luke Raley went to Lake E...
