There is no joy in The Land

The 2026 iteration of the Cleveland Guardians will not go 162-0 this season. They lost on the road in the game 2 of the season, 5-1 to Seattle.

Rookie sensation Chase DeLauter hit another homer for Cleveland giving him three in two games, but it was not enough for Cleveland which is 1-1.

Just a public service announcement. This is a Guardians-themed endeavor. The title is in deference to Ray Chapman, the Cleveland shortstop who died after being hit by a pitch during a game vs. the Yankees in New York in August of 1920. Cleveland would go on to win the World Series that year. Chappie's grave is at Lakeview Cemetery, which is within walking distance of my house. I took a picture of myself at the grave, which will appear from time to time on the blog.

Gavin Williams took the loss. He was hurt by walks and the long ball. He gave up a pair of home runs and walked six batters. Seattle’s Luke Raley homered for the second time in two nights. That’s a story because Luke Raley went to Lake Erie College

Raley went to high school at Medina Highland.

Cleveland won on opening night, 6-4, in a game in which DeLauter homered twice. DeLauter is the third player in MLB history to homer three times in his first two games. Trevor Story (2016) and Joe Cunningham (1954) are the other. The kid is like The Natural out of the gate.

According to Paul Hoynes of The Plain Dealer, DeLauter had received 804 texts from well-wishers following his Opening Night heroics. Baseball is a game of numbers. There are some numbers for you.

Back to the Friday night loss on a chilly night in Seattle. The Mariner's Seattle’s Cole Young hit a big three-run home run for the Mariners off of Williams in the fourth to give his team a 3-1 lead.

The Guardians jumped out to 1-0 lead on DeLauter’s home run. They loaded the bases in the 5th inning but did not score. Steve Kwan popped out to short left field and Rhys Hoskins was thrown out at the plate trying to score.

The Seattle TV announcers noted Hoskins did not make the smartest of plays trying to score. Left fielder Randy Arozorena gunned him down.

Joey Cantillo on the hill for the Guardians tonight vs. Bryan Woo of the Mariners.
