Guardians end August with rebound win vs. Royals.
The Guardians shook off a two-game losing streak with a beatdown of the Kansas City Royals on Aug. 30, 11-1 at Progressive Field.
The win moved the Guardians over .500 at 69-68 and within 3 1/2 games of Chicago in the AL Central race. Joe Ramirez hit his first home run since early June and collected four RBI to lead an offense that totaled 13 hits and scored three runs in three different innings. This came after collecting just three runs in the first two games of the weekend series. Cleveland lost the first two games of the homestand after a 6-0 trip vs. the Rockies and Angels.
Cleveland trailed early 1-0, but Nathaniel Lowe's 2-run home run in the bottom of the first inning gave the Guardians a 3-1 lead, and they never looked back.
Chase DeLauter went 4-for-4 at the plate, scored three times and doubled twice; he also made a nice running catch near the wall in right field. During the radio broadcast, it was noted how DeLauter's sore hamstring was being tested. The offense also received contributions from Joe Adell, who collected three hits and drove in three runs, and Steven Kwan, who continued his torrid hitting since July 1, with two more hits.
Parker Messick picked up the win. He survived a rocky first inning in which he used 31 pitches and gave up a run. But from that point on, he limited damage and ended up going six innings and picking up the win to improve to 11-8.
Cleveland hitters pounded KC starter Seth Lugo. They lit the veteran righty up for nine earned runs on nine hits and two home runs in just 3 1/3 innings of work.
The Guardians wrapped up August with a 13-13 record.
They open September on Tuesday vs. Toronto. Gavin Williams (12-7) takes the hill. He was bombed in his last start against the Angels when he received a no-decision in a game the Guardians won 8-6 in 10 innings.
