Jo Adell goes off in Guards rout of Giants
It was the Jo Adell Show on Tuesday night. The Guardians' right fielder hit a first-inning 3-run home run as part of a career-high six-RBI night as the Guardians clubbed the Giants, 8-1.
Adell, who Cleveland acquired at the trade deadline from the Angels, added a two-run single in the second inning and an RBI double in the fourth inning. He did all of this with a left knee that throbbed with pain. Three pitches before he hit his home run, he fouled a pitch off his knee. He remained in the game until the pain became too great, and he was taken out by manager Stephen Vogt.
The Adell home run flew 455 feet, deep into the left field bleachers.
Adell is day-to-day. The Guardians also played without rookie outfielder Chase DeLauter, who left Sunday's game with San Diego with hamstring tightness.
Cleveland improved to 61-55 with the win and moved to within 4 1/2 games of first-place Chicago. The White Sox lost for the second night in a row to the Cubs.
Jose Ramirez had three hits, including a double, and scored two runs, and Steve Kwan continued to sizzle at the plate, walking twice, getting a base hit and scoring three runs.
Foster Griffin started and picked up the win to improve to 14-4. He allowed five hits over six innings while striking out six and walking one.
Cleveland lit up San Francisco pitching for 12 hits, and the Guardians were 4-for-11 as a team with runners in scoring position. San Francisco fell to 51-74 with the loss. Cleveland entered the game just 9-9 since the All-Star break.
The Guardians' game with the Giants started a stretch with sub-.500 teams that include the Giants, Rockies (50-75), Angels (49-76), and Royals (52-74). Now is when they must make up ground for the post-All-Star Game swoon.
Also note: On Aug. 17, an off day, Cleveland was 5 1/2 games behind Chicago and coming off a miserable loss to San Diego. The White Sox led the Cubs late and were on the cusp of building the lead over Cleveland to six games. But the Cubs' Pete Crow-Armstrong hit a walk-off homer in extra innings, and the Guardians remained just 5 1/2 back. A glimmer of hope, if you will. It could be a turning point in the season.
Guards back at it tonight. They'll face their old friend, Matt 'Tugboat' Wilkinson, the lefty they traded for Patrick Bailey.
