Guards fall in 10 to Mets
Angel Genao had a debut for the ages, but it wasn't enough as the Guardians fell to the New York Mets, 6-5 in 10 innings on Aug. 5.
Genao, the Guardians' No. 2 prospect, was promoted from Columbus earlier in the day and started at third base. He singled on the first pitch he faced in the Major Leagues. Gabe Arias was designated for assignment to clear the roster spot.
Genao’s RBI single in the seventh inning gave Cleveland a brief 5-4 lead.
Cade Smith gave it back in the top of the ninth. He walked Jared Young to start the frame. He induced Francisco Alvarez to foul out to Genao and then struck out pinch hitter Luis Robert Jr.
But Jorge Polanco doubled, Marcus Semien walked, and AJ Ewing reached on an error by Bryan Rocchio, allowing Young to score the tying run.
Matt Festa gave up an RBI single to Bo Bichette in the tenth inning, which scored ghost runner Francisco Lindor from second, and gave the Mets a 6-5 lead.
It was a back-and-forth game. The Mets jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Brett Batty and Polanco hit back-to-back home runs in the third inning. Carson Benge homered in the sixth inning to give the Mets a 4-3 lead.
Bibee pitched well. He struck out 10 and didn't walk a batter.
Cleveland’s clutch hitting continues to be abysmal. The Guardians were 4-for-19 with runners in scoring position, and they left 15 runners on base.
But there were bright spots on offense. The Guardians tied the game at 3 in the fifth inning on a two-run single by first baseman and recently acquired Nathaniel Lowe.
And they strung together three straight hits in the bottom of the seventh inning to take a 5-4 lead on Genao’s first career RBI.
The loss dropped Cleveland to below .500. at 57-58. Chicago lost to Boston, so the Guardians remained three games behind the White Sox for first place. The Mets improved to 49-66.
