Guards get swept by Mets as slump continues
An embarrassing 13-6 loss to the Mets in a Thursday afternoon matinee capped off a forgettable homestand for the Guardians, who went 2-4 and continued their second-half nosedive.
Since the All-Star Break, the Guardians are 6-13 and have lost 11 of their last 14.
The Mets came into Cleveland with the second-worst record in the National League, but hit nine home runs over three games during the sweep.
New York clung to a 6-5 lead in the top of the seventh inning when Francisco Lindor tortured his old team with a three-run home run to right field off Craig Yoho to increase the Mets’ lead to 9-5 and suck all the energy out of the stadium.
Cleveland (57-59) remained three games out of first place behind Chicago. But the Twins are now tied with Cleveland for second place.
Recently acquired lefty Foster Griffin started and took the loss. He gave up a pair of home runs in the third inning after an Angel Martinez two-run single put Cleveland up 2-0.
He ended up being shelled for seven hits and five earned runs in four innings of work. Not exactly the first impression you want to make.
New York extended its lead to 6-2. Nathaniel Lowe hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to make it 6-5. But then Lindor hit his back-breaking home run, and the rout was on.
The highlight may have been catcher Austin Hedges throwing 1 1/3 innings of scoreless baseball in the ultimate mop-up role for Cleveland.
So now it’s on to Chicago.
