Williams whiffs 10 as Guardians down D-backs
Gavin Williams played the role of stopper/ace/No.1 as he struck out 10 over 5 2/3 innings as the Guardians downed Arizona, 5-0, on Aug. 2.
The game snapped a two-game losing skid for Cleveland, which salvaged the third game of a three-game weekend series at Progressive Field.
Williams was perfect through five innings. And it was the fifth time in five starts he has struck out at least 10 and walked less than two.
Williams finally gave up a hit to Tim Tawa to lead off the sixth inning. Tawa angered many on the Guardians when he fouled off a bunt attempt on the first pitch of the at-bat.
Williams only left because of a 1:34 rain delay.
Chase DeLauter led the Cleveland offense with a pair of hits and drove in three runs. Patrick Bailey homered, his sixth of the year for the Guardians, who improved to 57-56. Chicago (59-52) remained a full three games ahead of Cleveland in the AL Central race. Chicago (59-52) downed Tampa Bay, 9-1. Minnesota did lose to Seattle, 7-6. The Twins fell into third with a 56-57 record.
Williams improved to 11-6 on the year and lowered his ERA to 3.56.
A crowd of 24,869 flocked to Progressive Field.
Cleveland is off tomorrow. With the trade deadline at 6 p.m. on Aug 3 and it being 12 a.m. on Aug 3., the biggest thing the Guardians have done is trade former starting catcher Bo Naylor for a bullpen arm and an outfielder.
Detroit traded its ace pitcher and the two-time defending Cy Young Award winner, Tariq Skubal; Chicago picked up a starter Luis Castillo, from Seattle.
The Guardians are off until Tuesday when the New York Mets invade Progressive Field.
