Guardians lose to D-backs

The torture of Tanner Bibee continues, and the Guardians lost the first game of a weekend series with Arizona, 4-1, on Friday night, the final day of July.

Cleveland and Bibee led 1-0 heading into the eighth inning. He got the first out of the inning, but gave up a walk and a base hit before being lifted for reliever Erick Sabrowski. It was not the best of performances by Sabrowski. He walked Corbin Carroll and then gave up RBI-producing hits to Geraldo Perdomo and Gabriel Moreno to make it 3-1.
Moreno’s hit was punctuated by a misplay by right fielder Angel Martinez that brought Carroll around with the third run and the boo birds out.
According to post-game talker Dennis Manoloff, it was the fourth time this season that Cleveland has lost a game after leading after seven innings. All four have come at home.
Cleveland fell three games behind in the AL Central race as the White Sox of Chicago beat Tampa Bay, 6-1. Cleveland fell to 56-55 with the loss.
The Guardians are 4-10 since the All-Star break.
All this came on the heels of a 6-1 win over the Reds that allowed Cleveland to win the series. Kyle Manzardo went deep in that game.
Back to hard-luck Bibee. He went 7 1/3 innings and allowed three hits and two earned runs while striking out three. He left to thunderous applause but never tipped his cap.
The Guardians TV coverage caught a picture of Bibee after the Snakes had taken the lead. He did not look like a happy camper. But who could be happy when their record is 4-11?
The offense was again stagnant. Three hits. Two came from Steven Kwan. Josie walked, swiped a bag, and scored a run on a Rhys Hoskins RBI single in the first inning to give the Guardians a 1-0 lead.
The offensive effort was again microscopic.
I had the feeling when Martinez kicked that single by Gabriel Moreno that the season was bounding away. The Browns have started training camp, and the masses love them some football. There were 36,369 on. delightful summer night, but will the fan interest stick if they continue to lose?
Arizona improved to 58-52.
AL Central Standings as of 9:35 a.m. EST
Chicago 58-51
Minnesota 56-55
Cleveland 56-55
Detroit 52-58
Kansas City 46-65
