Gaurdians fall to.500 in loss to Arizona
The Guardians season continues to swirl toward no postseason. On a night when they finally got some offense going, the pitching faltered in a 12-8 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks on 1 August of 2026.
The loss was the second straight fo I'mr Cleveland, which is no 4-11 since the All-Star break and fell to 56-56 on the season.
A glint of good news came in the form of the score in Chicago’s game vs. Tampa Bay, the Rays won,1-0; and Minnesota was walked off by Seattle. Chicago continues to hold its three-game lead in the AL Central, while Minnesota remains tied with Cleveland.
Parker Messick started and was not the Parker Messick we’ve become accustomed to. The rookie lefty walked the game’s leadoff hitter and escaped the first inning unscathed.
He’d leave the game after 4 ⅓ innings, having allowed two runs on six hits while striking out six.
Arizona blew the game open in the seventh, scoring seven runs. Hunter Gaddis was hammered for four runs and a home run; Franco Aleman gave up a back-breaking 3-run shot to Corbin Carroll in the seventh inning.
That may have been the home run that officially turned the calendar to football season for the Cleveland sports fan.
Cleveland scored five runs in the bottom of the 8th inning and had the tying runs on base when Chase DeLauter flew out to center field to end the inning.
DeLauter hit his 12th home run to lead off the eighth inning and start the mini-rally.
A crowd of 30,392 watched it unfold over a marathon-like time of 3:39 minutes.
I started watching the game at home, and that is where I saw Rhys Hoskins hit the home run to put the Guardians up 2-0.
I was just sitting in my seat eight rows just beyond first base when DeLauter hit his laser beam into the right-field seats for his 12th home run of the year.
The back-breaking hit of the year was a little looper off the bat of Arizona catcher James McCann down the right-field line that landed just fair behind first base and drove in a pair of runs to make it 6-2, Arizona.
So tomorrow, or the Aug. 2 matinee, is a big game. Gavin Williams will take the hill for the 56-56 Guardians.
“We’re in it right now. We’re going through it. We have to come together and keep working,” Guardians manager Steve Vogt told Cleveland.com.
