Guards split first two with Reds
The Guardians split the first two games of their weekend series with the Reds, losing on May 15, 7-6, but coming back on May 16 to win 7-4, as Angel Martinez hit a two-run homer.
Cleveland is 25-22 and remains in first place by a game over the surprising Chicago White Sox.
Martinez also doubled, scored three runs, and was hit by a pitch, and Brayan Rocchio had two hits, drove in two runs, and stole a base for Cleveland, which rallied from a 4-2 deficit to win the May 16 game.
Erick Sabrowski pitched just 1/3 of an inning, but got a strikeout and ended up earning the win to improve to 2-1.
Cade Smith pitched a scoreless ninth while striking out two to pick up his 14th save of the year.
The Guardians lost the opener of the three-game series on Friday night. Tanner Bibee took the loss and dropped to 0-6 on the year. He scattered seven hits and allowed three runs, all earned, in 6 2/3 innings.
Rhys Hoskins lined his fourth home run of the year, a laser beam to the home run porch in left field, to lead the Cleveland offense, which also received eight walks.
