Guards rally past Sacramento
The Guardians Rhys Hoskins played the role of hometown hero on May 1 as he homered and drove in three runs while rookie sensation Chase DeLauter was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with two doubles and 2 RBI as the Guardians knocked off Sacramento, 8-5.
Cleveland battled back from 2-0 and 4-2 deficits to win its second straight game. The won improved Cleveland to 17-16.
Catcher Bo Naylor had two hits, scored two runs, and drove in another as he lifted his season batting average to .137.
There were some red flags in the win. The Guardians loaded the bases with nobody out in the first and did not score. Reliever Hunter Gaddis gave up an earned run and two hits while not recording an out and worked himself into a bases-loaded jam. He’s just not been the same pitcher this year. Remember, he started the season on the injured list with a sore forearm. He’d been a lockdown reliever in 2024 and 2025.
Reliever Erik Sabrowski picked up the win in relief of starter Joey Cantillo. Cade Smith earned the save. It was Smith’s 8th save in 10 chances and his first four-out save.
Sacramento DH Brent Rooker had two hits, and his first-inning two-run homer gave the A’s an early 2-0 lead.
Hoskins, who is from Sacramento, told Paul Hoynes of Cleveland.com he left 20 tickets for family and friends.
Steve Kwan made a leaping catch at the wall in center field with the bases loaded in the seventh inning to rob Colby Thomas of a potential grand slam homer that would have given Sacramento a 9-8 lead.
The two teams play today at 4:05 p.m. as Slade Cecconi faces lefty Jacob Lopez.
I watched the top half of the first inning, but turned in early.
Matt Underwood was on the call, but Rick Manning was swapped out for former catcher Chris Gimenez.
Jose Ramierze is slugging at just .190 with runners in scoring position. He has 6 homers and 12 RBI, but is batting .217 and has struggled mightily with runners on base, collecting two hits in 25 at-bats for a .080 average.
