Guardians back to .500
Just like the Guardians are back to a .500 baseball team.
Kansas City used the long ball and a big fourth inning to get past Cleveland, 6-2, on May 4.
Tanner Bibee took the loss. He was cruising through the first three innings, but lost it in the fourth inning, giving up four runs and throwing 41 pitches. Bobby Witt Jr. homered to start off the damage.
Later in the game, slugging rookie Joe Caglianone hit a homer. Cleveland and Detroit are tied for first at 18-18. The White Sox are 17-18 and a half-game back of Kansas City, which has won none and is 16-19, 1.5 games back.
The ebb and flow of the baseball season.
Cleveland got a two-run homer from David Fry. Rookie sensation Travis Bazzana singled to start the mini-rally, which included Fry's blast.
Inconsistent best describes the Indians' offense. The starting pitching has also not been great, wearing out the bullpen. Tom Hamilton excitedly insisted last night, after Bibee's short stint, that the club would have to shuffle the roster and send players up and down from the minor leagues to the major leagues.
So tonight, the Guards turn to Gavin Williams to right the tide. If ever there is a need for a stopper, it will be in the wet and cool confines of Kauffman Stadium.
We must also note in this baseball blog the passing of Yankees play-by-play man John Sterling, who died on May 4 at age 87.
"He cemented his place in the Bronx during the dawn of the internet, calling 5,060 games in a row at one point from 1989 to 2024," said his obit in The Athletic.
"Thuuuuuuuuuuuuh Yankees win! Thuuuuuuuuuuuuuu Yankees win!" was one of his signature calls. He was from a different era. He wore a suit and dress suit, many of his obits noted, even though he only did the games on the radio and was never seen by his audience.
He also would make great calls on Yankees homers.
"It is high!... It is far!...It is gone!" So RIP John Sterling.
