Cleveland gets back to winning ways

The Guardians scored four runs in the first inning and then used a stellar effort from their bullpen to down the slumping Boston Red Sox, 4-3, on May 29.

The Guardians used five relievers in support of starter Slade Cecconi to hold off the Red Sox for the final eight innings. Cade Smith pitched a scoreless ninth inning to pick up his 20th save of the season.
The Guardians improved to 34-25 with the win, their second straight. Boston fell to 23-33 with the loss.
After Travis Bazzana struck out to lead off the bottom of the first inning, Cleveland hitters collected six straight singles as they scored their four runs off of Boston starter Tyler Samaniego. Angel Martinez’s bases-loaded single plated two runs and was the big hit in the rally. Rhys Hoskins added an RBI base hit, and catcher Patrick Bailey added an RBI sacrifice fly to right field.
Boston rallied for three runs in the fifth off Ceccoi on four straight hits and a sacrifice fly.  Colin Holderman came on to retire the last two hitters of the inning and stop the Boston rally.
Cleveland defense made some standout plays in support of Cecconi. Daniel Schneeemann made a diving catch in center field to rob Masataka Yoshida of a hit in the second inning. Later that same inning, left fielder Angel Martinez made an outstanding throw to gun down Mickey Gasper trying to score from second on a ground ball error that got past Cleveland shortstop Brayan Rocchio. Martinez charged the ball and fired a 98.6 mph strike to catcher Patrick Bailey, who tagged out the sliding Gasper and brought the crowd of 34,404 to its feet.

The Guardians snapped a two-game losing skid with a 3-2 win over Washington thanks to another dominant pitching effort by Gavin Williams.
Williams allowed one run over seven innings while striking out four and scattering three hits. Williams improved to 8-3 with the win.
Cleveland scored three times in the fifth inning. It would be all the runs it would need. Jose Ramirez, Chae DeLauter and Angel Martinez collected RBIs during the uprising.
CJ Abrams' RBI-double in the third inning gave Washington an early 1-0 lead. A matinee crowd for 19,559 watched the contest.
