Martinez hits two homers in Cleveland win
Angel Martinez hit a pair of home runs to power the Cleveland Guardians to an 8-6 win over Toronto on April 23 at Rogers Center.
Cleveland scored five times in the first inning and was able to hold off Toronto the rest of the way. Daniel Schneemann got the Guardians started right, leading the game off with a home run off Toronto starter Max Scherzer. George Valera added a two-run double, and Martinez hit the first of his two dingers, a two-run shot.
Paul Hoynes of Cleveland.com pointed out that Martinez and Schneeman made up for the absence of Steven Kwan in the lineup. Manager Stephen Vogt gave Kwan the day off to rest his legs.
“Left unsaid was that Kwan’s .227 batting average could use a rest as well,” Hoynes noted.
Schneemann took over the lead-off spot, and Martinez played an outfield spot in place of Kwan. The two homered off future Hall-of-Famer Max Scherzer, who looked all of his 41 years of age.
Cleveland right-hander Gavin Williams earned the win, but had to battle to do so. He allowed a season-high six earned runs in six innings on seven hits. He struck out four and walked two.
Three Cleveland relievers threw three shutout innings. Cade Smith pitched the ninth and earned his sixth save. Cleveland improved to 15-12 with the win.
I watched the game on TV. No Matt Underwood or Rick Manning on the coverage, but instead Al Palowski and Chris Giminze. Of course, Andre Knott was the dugout reporter.
Game time today at 3:07 p.m. Joey Cantillo vs. Kevin Gausman on national TV, FS1.
Around the league, the Yankees won 12-4 over the Astros. Jazz Chishold Jr. had three hits and three RBI, and his second homer of the year. The Tigers lost to the Reds, 9-8.
