Guards limp home after loss to Cards
So the sojourn down south turned sour for the Guardians. They lost two straight to wrap up the six-game trip to Atlanta and St. Louis, including the April 15 Tax Day matinee to the Cards, 5-3. The Guardians ended up going 2-4 on the trip.
The loss dropped the Guardians to 10-9 on the young campaign. St. Louis is 10-8.
The good news is the Guardians come home to take on Baltimore beginning April 16.
They need some home cooking. They lost 6-5 in 10 innings on April 14 and then followed that up with this disappointing defeat.
Cleveland generated eight hits and scored a single run in the first and two in the seventh inning.
St. Louis used a big three-run sixth inning to fuel its win. Nathan Church powered the St. Louis offense with three hits, two runs, and an RBI.
The afternoon start drew 22,642 to Busch Stadium. Overcast skies and temperatures in the 70s supplied the playing conditions. Is there anything better than watching an MLB game during the work day?
Daniel Schneeman and Kyle Manzardo both collected two hits for Cleveland. Bo Naylor’s two-run double in the top of the seventh inning closed the Guardians' deficit to 4-3.
Slade Cecconi started for the Guardians and worked four innings while allowing an earned run on three hits and striking out four. Reliever Connor Brogdon absorbed the loss. He allowed three runs, all earned, on a pair of hits and a walk in 1 1/3 innings.
I watched a single at bat in the game. Jose Ramirez provided it. Batting lefty, he fouled the ball off the back of his right leg. He writhed in pain in the dirt but eventually took his place back in the box and tapped into an inning-ending double play.
Dustin May earned the win for the Cardinals, who improved to 10-8. He gave up an earned run over six innings. He scattered six hits and struck out four while walking one.
The game was played on the Major League-wide Jackie Robinson Day event. It commemorates Opening Day 1947, the day Robinson debuted for the Brooklyn Dodgers and broke the color barrier in Major League Baseball. As part of the day, all the players and coaches wear the No. 42, which was Robinson’s number.
